On July 8, 2025 Microsoft is set to release a critical security update for Active Directory Domain Controllers running Windows Server versions prior to 2025. This update is part of Microsoft’s ongoing effort to strengthen authentication protocols within Active Directory environments.
The update will tighten access checks within the Microsoft RPC Netlogon protocol, which is used by domain members to authenticate with the domain controller. These changes are being rolled out to all supported versions down to Windows Server 2008.
Who is affected?
If you’re running Samba as a member server in a Windows AD domain, you will only be affected only if you’re using the ‚ad‘ idmapping backend. In affected environments Samba’s SMB services will break after the Windows update is applied and the domain users will no longer be able to connect to Samba shares.
ELEMENTS environments
For ELEMENTS users, logging in with Active Directory credentials will temporarily be unavailable after the Microsoft security update. Our team is available to install a fix.
